How person-centered therapy works
Three conditions for growth.
Carl Rogers found that people grow when they feel understood, accepted and met by someone genuine. Person-centered therapy is built around those three conditions.
At Thrive this stance shapes all of our care, and some clients benefit from it as a main approach.

The method
What is person-centered therapy?
Person-centered therapy, sometimes called client-centered therapy, was developed by psychologist Carl Rogers in the 1940s and 1950s. It is one of the foundations of humanistic psychology.
Rogers believed people have a natural tendency toward growth, and that it flourishes when three conditions are present in the relationship: empathy, unconditional positive regard and genuineness. The therapist does not direct you toward their own idea of change, but helps you understand yourself and find your own direction.
Much of modern therapy draws on these ideas. At Thrive, a person-centered stance shapes how every clinician relates to you, whichever other methods are part of your plan.

What is person-centered therapy?
Person-centered therapy, developed by Carl Rogers, is a humanistic approach built on empathy, acceptance and genuineness. It trusts clients to lead their own growth.
Does my therapist give advice?
Less than in other approaches. Your therapist helps you find your own answers, and can share tools when you want them.
Can it be combined with other therapies?
Yes. At Thrive it is the foundation of how we relate to clients, alongside skills from CBT, DBT and others.
Does it work over video?
Yes. The relationship at the center of this approach translates well to live video.
Is it right for me?
If you want space to be heard and to find your own direction, it may be. Our admissions team can help you decide.
What does unconditional positive regard mean?
It means your therapist accepts you as a person without conditions, even when you talk about things you feel ashamed of.
Is person-centered therapy the same as humanistic therapy?
It is one of the main humanistic therapies, alongside approaches like Gestalt therapy, and focuses on the relationship and your capacity for growth.
How is it different from CBT?
CBT is structured and skills-based, with a clear agenda. Person-centered therapy follows your lead. Many people benefit from both.
Is person-centered therapy covered by insurance?
Person-centered therapy is part of our intensive outpatient program, which most commercial plans and TRICARE cover. We check your benefits for free before you start. See the plans we work with.
