Virtual intensive outpatient
programming

A middle ground

What is an IOP?

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a level of mental health care with 9 to 12 hours of treatment each week, usually across three days. It sits between once-a-week therapy and residential treatment, so you can keep up with work, school and family. Thrive delivers this care virtually, with group therapy, individual therapy, optional family sessions and psychiatric care, all from home.

FAQs

Your questions answered

How does an IOP work?

Thrive’s intensive outpatient program (IOP) runs entirely online. Each week includes 9 to 12 hours of care, usually across three days: small group sessions with the same peer group, a one-on-one session with your primary therapist, and family therapy when it fits your plan. You join every session from home over secure video, so you can keep up with work, school and family.

How long does IOP treatment last?

It depends on your needs and progress. Your care team reviews your progress throughout the program and builds a step-down plan with you, so your move to the next stage of care is mapped out before you finish.

What’s the difference between IOP and PHP?

The main difference is intensity. A partial hospitalization program (PHP) usually means 20 or more hours of care a week at a facility during the day. An IOP is 9 to 12 hours a week, which leaves room for daily life. PHP is often a step down from inpatient care, while an IOP can be a step down or a step up, depending on what you need.

How do I know if IOP is the right level of care?

An IOP may fit if weekly therapy is not giving you enough support, if symptoms are getting in the way of work, school or relationships, or if you are leaving inpatient care or a PHP and need continued structure. Our clinical assessment confirms the level of care that fits you. If you are in danger right now, call or text 988.

Is IOP covered by insurance?

In most cases, yes. Most commercial plans and TRICARE cover our IOP. We check your benefits for free and get back to you within 24 hours.
