The method
What is family therapy?
Family therapy grew out of family systems thinking in the 1950s, which views mental health in the context of relationships rather than in one person alone. How a family communicates, solves problems and handles stress can support recovery or make it harder.
In family sessions, a clinician helps you and the people you choose talk about what is happening, understand each other’s experience and agree on how to support progress. Family coaching gives loved ones practical guidance on what helps and what to avoid.
At Thrive, family work is always with your consent. It can include parents, partners, siblings, adult children or close friends, and they can join from wherever they are.
It may help if you

Who can join family sessions?
Anyone you choose: parents, partners, siblings, adult children or close friends. Nothing is shared without your consent.
Do my family members need to be in the same state?
No. Loved ones can join the video session from anywhere.
What is family coaching?
Coaching gives loved ones practical guidance on how to support you, communicate better and look after themselves.
What if my family relationships are strained?
That is common. Sessions are structured and guided, and you decide how fast to go.
Is family therapy required?
No. It is offered when it helps your recovery, and always with your agreement.
What is family systems therapy?
It is an approach that looks at how family members influence each other, and helps change patterns in the whole system rather than focusing on one person.
Can I have family sessions without my whole family?
Yes. You choose who joins, and sessions can include just one person, such as a partner or parent.
What is the difference between family therapy and couples therapy?
Couples therapy focuses on a romantic relationship. Family therapy at Thrive supports your recovery and can include a partner along with other loved ones.
Is family therapy covered by insurance?
Family therapy and coaching is part of our intensive outpatient program, which most commercial plans and TRICARE cover. We check your benefits for free before you start. See the plans we work with.
